What Should You Do With Your Old Clothes?

Most people probably have clothes in their closets or drawers that they never wear anymore for all kinds of reasons, yet they also keep them just because it feels bad to throw them out. People are always told that they need to be as sustainable as possible, and throwing away clothes seems to go against that, especially if the clothes themselves are good and you just don’t like the style, or they don’t fit, for example. The good news is, there are a few ways you can handle this situation that won’t make you feel guilty, but that will also give you more space at home because you can remove your old clothes from your house. Read on to find out more about exactly what you can do.

Upcycle

It might be that with a few tweaks, you can actually turn clothes you wouldn’t wear again into something you actually like much more. A good example is turning a pair of old jeans into fashionable shorts, or perhaps you could add patches to worn-out tops to make them look unique and stylish and hide any flaws they might have had. Not only will this save you money because you won’t have to buy new things, but you can learn a lot of new skills too, and that’s always a bonus in life.

One other idea when it comes to upcycling is to send your old t-shirts to be made into a blanket. At myt-shirtblanket.com, this is exactly what happens – you send away the clothes you don’t want to wear but also don’t want to throw out, and the professionals send you back a gorgeous blanket that’s practical and fun. It could make a great present or just something you can keep for yourself that’s full of memories.

Donate To Charities

If you want to get rid of the clothes you no longer wear but you don’t like the idea of throwing them out, donating them to charity can be an ideal solution. Many non-profit organizations will accept used clothes as long as they are in good condition (and ideally you should wash them to ensure they’re clean, too), and they can sell them in special stores or online and use the money they make to help those in need.

If you start to look around your local area, you’ll probably notice donation centers and bins or perhaps stores that ask for donations to be dropped off (make sure you don’t leave the donations outside, however, as this can be tempting for thieves and cause access issues).

Organize Clothing Swaps

If you want to get rid of old clothes and get some new ones, the traditional option would be to throw the old things in the trash and head to the store to buy more. This is wasteful and expensive, and if you want to avoid this, why not organize a clothing swap instead?

A clothing swap is a chance for friends and family to get together and literally swap their old clothes. Everyone brings a selection, and you can all pick out the things you want – anything left over can be donated, as mentioned above. If everyone brings a drink and something to eat, you can make a fun event out of it and even make it a regular thing.
