Poetry Is My Power

Gabriela McBride, American Girl’s 2017 Girl of the Year, is here to bring even more inspiration to your child! Gabriela is a doll who takes poetry as a way to express herself and work through her stuttering. She has been an inspiration to so many girls around the globe. The Gabriela doll rings true as an estimated 70 million people around the world stutter. The poetry helps Gabriela build up confidence and speak out, instead of being quiet and afraid!

American Girl has partnered with Scholastic to create Express Yourself! It is a custom curriculum that is focused on grades 3rd through 5th. It will help teach these children how to use poetry to express how they are feeling. If they are feeling sad, they can put it to words, or feeling happy and excited. It is a wonderful program to help teach children it is important to express how you feel!

Poetry Is My Power – explore poetry as a means of expression

You can find worksheets that help support learning, and engage students, and share the fundamental elements of a poem! They even have a video for poetry tips from a pro! You can print out worksheets and watch the video with your child, and it can be a great way to help them feel empowered to be themselves!

I love how American Girl strives to let your child be the best version of them! Through their inspirational dolls, they can learn that we are all different, and face obstacles that we have to overcome in life! I love the Express Yourself campaign, it is a great tool to help children find a healthy way to express how they are feeling!

We live in a hard world, and any more schools can have a lot of bullying and other conflicts. I feel that this Poetry is My Power program can really help shape these children at a prime age, to help them learn how to express how they feel in a really healthy way! Instead of bottling it up, or picking on someone else!
