How To Find A Hobby That Truly Suits You
It’s normal to try out a few hobbies throughout life. Some will stick with you for years on end, some burn out after a few months – that’s very common! But when all the hobbies you’ve gotten into lately lose their luster after just a few weeks, it’s time to find a hobby that’s truly suited to you.
And there’s some good news too: we can help you find that kind of activity! Indeed, you have to ask yourself a few questions about what you’re looking for and what kind of time and energy you have to dedicate to it. But that can be a pretty lengthy decision-making process when you don’t know how to start!
As such, here are some of the best questions to dig into what would be enjoyable for you, and whether or not it would be practical. Check them out in the list below.

Do You Want to Stay in or Go Out?
The way you want to use your free time will have a massive influence on the hobby that’s best for you. One of the biggest factors in deciding this is whether you want to stay in or spend more time outside.
Outside lovers are more likely to enjoy more hands-on, sociable activities, such as hiking, geocaching, or joining a hobby club. Indoor enthusiasts, on the other hand, are more likely to enjoy creative hobbies that are less likely to take too much energy.
Of course, there’s a chance you’re someone who’s in the middle as well! If you’re more of a homebody, but you’d still like a small social element to benefit from, gaming could be a great option for you. There are lots of different game genres out there, many of which offer a relaxing, solo play experience, and many others offer an interactive experience to be enjoyed with other people.
For example, you could play a round of non-betting, single player poker in your own free time, but when you fancy talking to other people, hop onto a cosy farming sim multiplayer game for the next hour. There really is something for everyone!
Do You Mind Making a Mess?
Being messy isn’t a bad thing, but if you’re sick of tidying up other messes in the house (and when you’ve got a toddler, there always seems to be one more to clean up!), we recommend avoiding further messy things to do.
This doesn’t mean counting out anything that could be messy, such as painting or baking, but you will need to find ways to cut corners on the clean up that might be required afterwards.
Laying a sheet on the floor to catch paint droplets, for example, and using blue tack to keep paint brush pots and your water jar firmly on the table you’re using. Again, if you have a toddler who bumps into things on a regular basis, this will save you having to pick things up every five minutes!
How Much Time Do You Really Have?
When you’re a mom, you have to keep that time factor in mind more than anything else! How much free time do you realistically have to dedicate to a hobby? Count up what happens on a usual day. If your children are of an age that means they spend a portion of time outside of the house, whether at school, nursery, or a club, you’re likely to have a good couple hours to yourself between morning and early afternoon.
However, if you have younger children, your time constraints are likely to be stricter. You may get half an hour spare when they go down for a nap, but even that can be tetchy! And if you’re thinking you’d rather use this spare time to get chores done, we say put those further down the list. Put something fun that’s just for you up higher!
Finding a Hobby That’s Good for You
If you want to find a hobby that’s truly good for you, make sure you start with the points above. Think about where you’d like to be, how messy the activity is, and whether or not you’ve got some proper quality time for it.
Hobbies don’t necessarily require tons of commitment, but when you have little to no time to yourself, you can’t opt for a craft that needs hours and hours of practice! Keep that in mind whenever you’re on the lookout for something fun to do and you’re much more likely to have success!
