Revolution Math Makes Learning Fun!

Summer vacation is in full swing in Florida. Between day trips, pool days, and playing with friends, trying to convince my children to practice school work isn’t the easiest task. Honestly, it’s not a battle I want to fight when it’s 85 degrees and sunny all day either. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t worry about my kids losing their skills over the summer, I absolutely do, but I’m not a teacher and I just don’t know how to make practicing third grade math fun. Revolution Math is the answer!

What is Revolution Math

Revolution Math is an online class taught by dedicated teachers for 2nd-5th graders to help them build better math skills and a love for learning. It is created with a story-based curriculum, and provides an interactive experience, letting students talk and see the teacher and their peers. Classes take place once a week for 60-minutes in a live, online classroom.

How it Works

Each week, students log into an online classroom from a tablet or home computer. Where they will meet the three other classmates enrolled in the same class time. Their live teacher also joins them to lead the class. The teacher is responsible for learning your child’s strengths and weaknesses over time, and drawing the most out of them.
Students are actively engaged and have fun with the story-based curriculum by choosing a character to play and reading their lines in the story during class.

Why we Love it!
A week before Lilly’s first class we received a Revolution Math kit in the mail, packed with everything she would need to be successful. The kit came with pencils, a notebook, dice, character masks, and more.
On the afternoon of Lilly’s first class, she easily logged on to the Revolution Math class and was all smiles from the start. She had 2 other kids in her class who seemed to mesh really well together, they joked and laughed with each other and helped each other when needed.
The teacher was fantastic! He was so patient and really got the kids excited to learn, I was beyond impressed. The kids each took turns reading the story about the “Raging Rock Troll”, Lilly had chosen to be the character Zoe “because her hair is amazing”.

Then the class proceeded as they worked together and individually on math problems and earned points that can be collected and redeemed toward prizes.
The class lasted an hour, and Lilly was bumbed out when it was over, and has asked if it was her math class day every day since. I am really excited for her to continue with this class. Anthony has enrolled in Sylvan while he was in elementary school and I was considering signing the twins up for Kumon, Mathnasium, or another learning center close by, but now I found a program that is not only convenient, and my kids love it, but it’s also affordable!
Revolution Math is absolutely the perfect resource for parents who want to get their kids excited about going back to school while keeping them engaged in learning while having fun.

5 Tips for Saving for a Summer Vacation

Saving for a Summer Vacation

It is officially the start of summer!  Even though down here in Florida summer seems to have started several months ago.  For my family and I, the best part of summer is traveling.  We love taking road trips over to Orlando, or spending long weekends at the beach.  However, as a family of five, traveling can add up quickly.  So, it is important for us to save ahead for all our vacationing plans.

Top Tips for Saving for Summer Travel

Plan ahead: I try to plan our summer travel a couple months before school let out for the summer.  This gives me plenty of time to search around for the best locations and the cheapest travel dates.  This will help save you money and also give you an idea of exactly how much you need to save.

Sell Old Stuff During Spring Cleaning:  With 3 kids, our house gets cluttered quickly.  While we are spring cleaning each year, I declutter every room in the house and items that are sellable are either brought to a local consignment store, sent to online resale sites like Thredup, or we hold our own yard sale.  This is a fairly easy way to earn a chunk of the funds you’ll need for your vacation.

Make your Credit Cards Work for You:  I hate having debt, however I have several credit cards that work to save me money.  Two examples are my Disney Chase Card and my Hilton Rewards American Express Card.  I use these to buy everyday essentials like gas, groceries, and medicine throughout the year and then make sure I pay them in full every month.  In turn I earn reward points towards free travel.  I save my Disney points for trips to Disney World and I use my Hilton Rewards on a lot of our hotel stays.

Cut Down on Your Monthly Expenses:  Try buying in bulk or shopping your local farmers market to save on your grocery bill.  Walk wherever possible during the nice spring whether to save on gas costs.  By taking a close look at your average monthly spending and tightening your budget, you should be able to take a small chunk of money to set aside for a vacation.  When you’re on your dream vacation, you won’t be thinking about the $4 coffees you gave up.

Save on Diapers: Having children in diapers is a huge expense!  We had 3 in diapers at one point and I remember counting down the months till they were all potty trained, so we would have a raise in funds.  However, there is easy ways to save on diapers like switching to Luvs.  Once the twins came we made the switch and our wallets thanked us.

Why Luvs are a great diaper option:

  • Features Super Absorbent Leakguards and NightLock Plus™, its largest absorbency area ever, Luvs Diapers lock away wetness and absorb even more than regular Luvs.
  • With large refastenable stretch tabs, fastening Luvs diapers is super easy for parents, plus they can rest assured knowing that they’re giving baby a secure, snug fit again and again.
  • Luvs knows that between laundry, play dates, snack time, and nap time, you don’t have time for leaks. Luvs makes life easier for busy parents by helping to keep leaks in the diaper where they belong, so baby stays dry and comfortable, even overnight.
  • A contoured shape hugs baby for a great fit and a super soft cottony material and it softer than ever before so it feels gentle on baby’s skin.
  • The Luvs Money Back Guarantee: Luvs feels so strongly about their diapers that they guarantee them! If you aren’t satisfied with the leakage protection of Luvs, they’ll refund your money.

Affordable Party Ideas for the 4th of July

Affordable Party Ideas

Affordable Party Ideas for the 4th of July

If you are wanting to throw a festive but yet affordable 4th of July party, then check out the ideas below! I am going to share some affordable party ideas for the 4th of July! You can have a festive time, and not break your piggy bank in the process.

The 4th of July is one of the biggest celebrations of Summer, so you want it to be a bang! But if you find your strapped for cash after graduations, family vacations or money is just tight in general, then here are some affordable ideas!

Host a Festive 4th of July Party for Less

Block Party: This is a traditional party idea, but a lot of towns don’t do this anymore. Consider doing a block party with your neighbors. Assign each household a certain food, drink, or dishware to bring. This will cut down the cost of buying a whole meal to feed a lot of people, and you will have lots of fun!

Pot Luck: A 4th of July party is not a birthday celebration, so it is okay to ask family and friends to bring a dish. You could ask them to bring sides, or drinks, or designate each person a certain dish that compliments the main dish!

Cups, Plates, Silverware: Don’t go all out for the red, white and blue star and striped paper dishes. You will pay a ton of money for these, and probably less count in the pack. Instead you could mix and match solid colored items for a lot less. Look at dollar stores or even the dollar bins at Target. They will have solid red, white and blue cups, plates, silverware, that won’t cost much. Or if you have enough dishes, use your own and just toss in the dishwasher after.

Decorations: You might be surprised what the dollar stores have for decorations. You could find some really neat 4th of July inspired paper lanterns, centerpieces, and more to decorate with. They have really cute decor for cheap. Just budget a certain amount for decorations and make sure not to go over it. Streamers are a very affordable decoration idea, you can truly decorate a lot with a roll of streamers!

Outdoor Games: If you have children coming, consider just simple outdoor games to keep them entertained. Spray paint stars and stripes on the lawn, or do a big hop scotch area on the sidewalk. Buy some glow sticks for them to play with, water balloons. Anything that doesn’t take much to do. Most kids will just run around and play the whole time or watch fireworks being shot off.

Fireworks: If you plan to shoot off some fireworks, consider buying them the day of the 4th. A lot of stands will already begin to discount the fireworks on the 4th of July. You can save a little money this way. Also feel free to ask guest to bring a few fireworks if they want to shoot some off as well.

Dress: Don’t feel you have to run out and buy the whole family red, white, and blue outfits! First hit up your closet and see if you can piece an outfit together to make it work! A lot of times you will find something that will work just as well as buying a new shirt.

Food Ideas

BBQ: Consider doing hot dogs and hamburgers, the classic bbq food. Instead of buying pre-made hamburger patties, make your own, you will save a ton this way. Or buy a few pork butts and put them in the crockpot with some bbq sauce for slider sandwiches. Some stores will offer buy one get one free on these roasts!

Side Dishes: Consider doing beans, potato salad, pasta salads, and so on. These are all easy to make and pretty affordable. If you make your own salads, you can make three times as much for half the price of buying a container already made.

Fruit: Buy a few watermelons and then a star cookie cutter, and make cute star shaped watermelon pieces. This is a festive and very affordable treat. Also do strawberries and other berries, you can buy on sale and then have them out.

Cake: Do a cake for a dessert. This is a very affordable dessert, and you could do a flag design on top, or do a jello poke cake, and then cool whip for frosting and top with slices of strawberries. It won’t cost more than $5-$7 to make and will feed a lot.

Drinks: Consider doing water, tea and lemonade. All are very affordable drink options, and scream summer! If people want alcoholic drinks, as them to bring it themselves.

Top 12 Must Have Items for Traveling to BlogHer 2017

This post is sponsored by Dramamine and SheKnows Media

Traveling-to-Blogher

When I heard BlogHer 2017 was going to be held in Orlando, it brought enough excitement for me to overcome my social anxiety and buy a ticket as fast as I could pull out my credit card. Spending the weekend learning with some amazing women in the middle of a city that is packed with family fun on every corner has me thrilled!  I have been planning since I bought my ticket; which sessions to attend, what outfits to wear, how to get there without getting car sick, and of course, what attractions to visit before and after the conference.

Blogher-Packing-List

Blogher Packing List

While my suitcase will be packed full of the usual travel must-haves such as cute outfits, swimsuits, makeup, toiletries and some snacks for the hotel room, I also pack a conference tote that doubles as my travel bag.

In my travel/conference tote, these are the must-have items that will get me through the long drive over to Orlando and keep me on the top of my game during the conference.

  • Dramamine® Non-Drowsy Naturals: I get motion sickness when I travel. Whether I’m flying, driving, or boating I always get that yucky feeling.  And I already know that the drive to Orlando will surely cause me to get car sick along the way.  The thought of showing up to the resort, with three children in tow, after having to pull over on the side of a hot and humid Florida highway does not sound like the way I want to start this exciting weekend.  However, I also can’t show up feeling groggy and in need of a nap. Luckily Dramamine® introduced me to their first non-drowsy solution to motion sickness, Dramamine® Non-Drowsy Naturals, which have been a game changer when I travel.
  • A Neutral colored scarf: my husband likes to crank up the AC in our car making it feel more like we are back in Boston than in Florida. So, I need something to throw on in the car.  Hotel conference areas are also cold so I like to have an extra layer available during the day.
  • Notebooks and Pens: I am old school when it comes to notes. My heart flutters for a pretty new notebook or finding a pen that writes perfectly.
  • Smart Phone: this is a given, right? I can’t imagine a day without my phone as a blogger, but if there is a time you’re going to need it most, I would say it’s at a blogging conference.  From taking pictures and posting on social media to following all your new friends, you’ll need your phone constantly.
  • Extra Battery: even the latest phone models are unlikely to stay charged all day at a conference and being close to an outlet isn’t always an option so pack an extra power bank. Honestly, I’ve packed two.
  • Business Cards: you exchange a lot of business cards at blog conferences. With meeting brand reps at the expo and new bloggers to follow, business cards are being passed out all over the place.
  • Energy bars: for when you get a little hungry between meals and don’t feel like going all the way back to your room.
  • Gum: you will be eating, drinking, and talking with brands and new friends all day. The easiest way to freshen up your breath quickly is a piece of gum.
  • Laptop: I know it is a divided issue on whether you need to bring your laptop to the conference. A lot of bloggers like to take notes on their laptop and have it with them all day.  While it’s not a necessity for me inside the conference, I do like to have it while traveling and inside my hotel room so that getting work done is still an option.
  • Power strip: you will be in rooms with hundreds of bloggers and only a few outlets. If you think you’ll need to use a wall charger for your laptop or phone, bring a power strip.  Also, if you’re sharing your room with other bloggers (or children who have just as many devices as a blogger) A power strip is a necessity.  You’ll want to be sure your phone and power banks are fully charged for each morning.
  • Camera: at past conferences, I only used my phone for pictures and while phones can take great pictures, they never seem to come out as crisp and bright as when I have my camera. However, lugging a DSLR camera around a conference didn’t seem like fun either; this year I have a mirrorless camera that gives me those crisp images with a quarter of the weight, so it is on my must-pack list.
  • Small crossbody bag/wristlet with ID, some cash, and credit cards: At BlogHer, I will be trying to sneak in some pool time with the kids during conference days and exploring more of Orlando after the conference.  So having a small bag that I can pull out with all my essentials in it is perfect.

Blogher-packing-must-haves

With my tote packed and organized with everything I need, I know I will feel confident throughout the conference.  Then when it is time to hit the town with my family, I can throw my phone, gum and Dramamine® Non-Drowsy into my crossbody bag and be ready for all the attractions.  I am counting on the leading brand in motion sickness prevention to get me through Orlando, where the city’s Ferris Wheel is 400ft tall and the fastest roller coaster goes 73 mph!

One dose of Dramamine® Non-Drowsy Naturals contains the full clinically-tested ginger dosage for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness. Since it’s made from natural ginger, it is safe to use every day you travel.
