4 Worrying Sounds You Can’t Ignore Around Your Home

You hear all sorts of sounds all over your home, and many of them aren’t worrisome at all. Floorboards are going to creak, and pipes are bound to squeal now and then. Nevertheless, some sounds are much worse than others and could signify some major home problems. It’s never wise to ignore these, so here are some worrying sounds to listen out for. 

Scratching Inside The Attic Or Between Walls

Do you hear a scratching or scittering sound in your attic or between wall partitions? If so, there’s a strong chance you’ve got a pest problem in your home. Rats, mice, squirrels, and other small rodents can find a breach in your property and sneak in to make nests. You must take immediate action before they breed, and you quickly become outnumbered. 

Look for humane pest control services and always locate the breach so you can seal it up and prevent the same problem from happening again. 

Any Strange Noises From Your AC Unit

Listen out for any odd noises coming from your air conditioner, such as: 

• Grinding
• Excessive buzzing
• Clanking
• High-pitched squeals

All will indicate a problem of sorts with your AC unit, so you need to turn it off and inspect inside. It’s sometimes very obvious what the problem is – like something trapped in the fan – or it’s not clear at all. More often than not, you’ll need to get some AC repair work done because any of these noises are not natural, and you run the risk of destroying the unit completely.

Whistling From Your Windows

You’re bound to get some noise coming in from the outside, especially when it’s very windy. However, if your windows start whistling in the wind, then it’s a sign your home is in a slightly worse condition than you thought. 

Whistling windows typically mean the seals have gone or the weather stripping is worn down. In either case, you’ve got small gaps appearing around the windows that let in air from outside, causing the whistling sound. It’s terrible for energy efficiency – not to mention soundproofing – so either reseal your windows or get new ones installed. 

Banging Sounds In Your Pipes

Hearing some sounds from your water pipes isn’t always a bad thing. Water is being pushed through them with force, so they’re bound to groan slightly at times. Things become worrisome when you hear banging or knocking sounds from the pipes. This usually means there are loose pipes or problems with the water pressure – both of which can cause long-term damage or lead to a burst pipe. 

Listen out for this and turn off the water if you hear any loud banging noises. Your best bet is to call a plumber so they can inspect your plumbing system and identify the reason for the noise. It means you can deal with a problem before you end up with serious flooding or more expensive plumbing issues to care for. 

You should always keep an ear out for any strange sounds around your home because they could signify problems with various things. A lot of the time, the sounds themselves are the first warning sign of a bigger issue, so take that as your cue to act!
