Top Tips for Choosing the Right Preschool

When it comes to parenthood, one of the saddest realities is that at some stage, you have to go back to work. There are plenty of studies out there that show that children with a quality preschool education will often do better socially and developmentally in school. They’re less likely to commit crimes or do drugs.

But when you factor in the ultra competitive admissions process when it comes to preschools, especially depending on your area, it’s going to be a challenge. Finding the right preschool for your kid can be more daunting than you expect, especially if this is your first rodeo. You may not have considered preschool options at any point, but you’re watching all of your friends’ children be put down for preschools from the moment they’re born, which means that you’re technically behind. Here are some tips for helping you to choose the right one for your child.

  1. Find out the preschool’s learning goals. What do you want from a preschool? The whole idea is to engage your child and yet there are some that don’t focus on the basics of cognition such as the ABCs or 123s. You need to do what you can to give your children the best possible start in life and that means looking for the learning goals of the preschools you tour and comparing them with your expectations for your child.
  2. Talk about play. You won’t find much book learning in preschool and that’s exactly as it should be. You need your children learning through play and doing as much as possible and you want your children learning in an environment that doesn’t make them into mini drillers. You want them to explore, try, learn, laugh and have as much fun because at this young age, learning through play is where it’s at.
  3. Find out if the children have freedom to choose their own activities. Children who get to choose some of their activities in preschool have better outcomes in life because they are learning to take control of their day from a young age. They will have the choice between preferred and non preferred activities and you want to make sure that there are a variety of materials designed to help your child with their time, base science, math, literacy, but also music, art and playtime. There needs to be room for belief. So look at the school schedule and see whether there is room for this. It doesn’t all have to be teacher led instruction.
  4. What are your home values? This is a big question because if you are putting your children into preschool, you need to make sure that you’re using one that allows for your home values to be included. Consistency is essential in helping them to develop, but if you can find a preschool that has the same values you do at home, you’re going to be able to find it quite easy to bridge that gap.
