How to Save Cash When Planning Your Wedding

Weddings are one of the most exciting milestones you can meet in life, but they also come with a hefty price tag. The good news is that with a little bit of creativity and some forward thinking, you can have a beautiful celebration without blowing out your budget or going way beyond what your means are.

Whether you’re aiming for a backyard gathering or more traditional event, there are smart ways to cut costs without sacrificing on style. For example, one easy win is buying wholesale flowers instead of going through a traditional florist. Most people don’t realise that’s an option, so let’s take a look at other strategies that could go far beyond the blooms.

  1. Prioritise the thing that really matters. What are your non-negotiables when it comes to your wedding day? Is it the venue, the food, or a band? By deciding what really matters to you and your partner, you can allocate your budget accordingly. It’s super easy to get swept up in the idea of the perfect wedding, but not every detail has to be a splurge. Spend money where it counts and simplify or skip the rest.
  2. Make your guest list more exclusive. It’s not the easiest thing to do, especially if you’ve got relatives who believe that you should be inviting everybody that they know. But reducing your guest count is one of the fastest ways to cut costs across the board. Fewer guests means fewer chairs, which means fewer meals, which means fewer favours and a smaller venue. Consider inviting only your closest and dearest friends and family. Those who will truly be a part of your wedding and marriage going forward. Quality over quantity is budget friendly as a mantra and work embracing.
  3. Be flexible with your times and dates. Saturday evening weddings are in high demand and vendors often know it. Opting for a Friday evening, Sunday brunch or a weekday evening can score you major savings on your venue and the services that you buy. Offseason weddings, like those in late winter or even the earlier spring months, can also come with discounts and better availability.
  4. Do it yourself as much as you can. It’s nice to have a wedding planner, but that’s a cost. It’s nice to have somebody doing everything for you, but that’s a cost. It’s nice to print invitations, but again, that’s a cost. There are so many things that you can do yourself, but there are other things you shouldn’t, for example. Enlist friends with specific skills, graphic designers for the invites, bakers for the cake, or musicians for the bands. Think about those who might be willing to contribute as a wedding gift rather than you having to spend out.
  5. Get smart with your shopping. You don’t need designer labels to look fantastic. Consider buying off the rack when it comes to your dress and shopping the sample sales. Bridesmaids can wear mismatched dresses in a common colour palette. This is great if you’re looking to make your wedding lesson.
  6. Reuse where you can. Ceremony decor can be moved to the reception, Bridesmaids bouquets can become centrepieces. A dessert table can replace individual wedding favours. There are so many things you can do to reuse and repurpose that you can save money as you go.
