Get Your Swimming Pool Ready for Sunshine

The sun is shining, the days are longer, and that can only mean one thing. It’s pool season. If your backyard Oasis has been hibernating all winter and hidden under a cover, it’s time to wake it up, freshen it up and get it ready for the splashing, poolside snacks and lounging that’s to come. Whether you’re using it for yourself or you’re planning casual weekend dips and full on pool parties, some preparation now means a lot more fun later on.

If you’ve recently installed a new world class pool drain, you’re already ahead of the game in terms of safety and efficiency. But there is so much more to do before you can cannonball into the pool. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at how you can get your swimming pool ready for sunshine.

  • Start with a clean. Before you even think about diving in, give your pool a deep clean. Remove the cover, skim off any leaves or debris, and vacuum the bottom. A good scrub of the walls and tiles will banish any lingering algae or grime from the offseason, too. It’s not a glamorous job, but it is totally worth it.
  • Check the chemistry of the water. Water balance is so important if you want to keep your pool safe to swim in but sparkling. Test the pH, chlorine, alkalinity and calcium hardness levels with a home test kit, or bring a water sample to your local pool store. Adjusting the chemicals might sound intimidating, but most kits come with clear instructions. Don’t skip out on this step because getting the water balance early prevents algae blooms and cloudy pool dramas later.
  • Check out all your equipment. From the filters to the pumps, the heaters to the lights, take some time to check all of the equipment. Clean out the skimmer baskets, inspect the hoses for cracks, and make sure everything is running the way that it should. This is the perfect time to set timers for pumps and heaters so you’re not running them around the clock.
  • Add some style. Now that your pool is clean and running like a dream, you need to add some fun extras to make the area pop. Colourful lounges, floating drink holders or even some twinkle lights for evening swims all look fantastic. You can get a couple of new inflatables if the ones that you’ve had stashed away are no longer good, or you can even get a Bluetooth waterproof speaker that can turn your backyard into a summer hangout.
  • Be safe. Before that first splash of the season, take a quick safety check. Check the gates and the fences, check your first aid kit, and know that the pool rules are clear. If you’ve got kids around, reinforce those rules before they’re allowed in the pool, and never, ever let them in without supervision.

It just takes a little effort to get your swimming pool ready for sunshine.
