Pack plenty of things to do
The first thing you need to do is probably the most important and that is to pack plenty of things to do. You could create little travel packs for each of your kids, with age-appropriate things for them to get themselves stuck into. This could range from toys that stick on the window for toddlers, to a new game for their console or phone if they are that bit older. You could add in travel board games, puzzles and other similar things to get their brains working! Don’t forget to bring a few things for yourself too – charge your phone so you can play games like bridge, and why not pack a book or two?
Make a special car snack box
When children get bored, they get hungry, it’s one of the facts of life! Instead of having to tell them no every few seconds, why not make them a special snack box? This can have plenty of compartments which you can put a wide array of different snacks in, from sweets to fruit to crisps. This can make it much easier for them to eat what they feel like, keep them entertained and you don’t need to dish something out every few minutes for them.
Plan your stop offs
If your journey is really long, you could consider stopping at a hotel halfway to break up the trip. If not, you can still plan stop-offs which can keep everyone amused and also let everybody stretch their legs. You could plan to stop at an attraction such as a theme park, or a zoo, or even just go out for lunch and dinner so you can refuel, use the toilets and everyone can stretch their legs and get out of the car for a while.
These are just a few things you can do to keep the family entertained on a long car journey to make it that bit more tolerable and even good fun! Just remember, even if it does get stressful at times, you are going somewhere great and it will all be worth it.
