The holidays are over but it’s still chilly outside, this has us spending a lot of cozy family nights inside.  I love nights like these!  Curling up on the couch with my kids, enjoying some sweets and popcorn, watching a movie or reading a great book, or perhaps playing a fun game.  These are the nights when my family makes some of the best memories.  Laid back, laughing, relaxed in our cozy Garner Hill pajamas.

Spring break starts in just 3 weeks for us down here in Florida, and then the two months later we start summer break!  Time is flying by and I definitely need to start preparing for the messes, mayhem, and memory making that comes with having 3 kids running around all day.

While I was at Target today I started preparing by stocking up on Kleenex Wet Wipes.  In the fall I stock up on Kleenex tissues for all the runny noses that come during the cold months, and in the spring I stock up on Kleenex Wet Wipes to clean all the dirty hands and messy faces that happen when we get to let loose and have fun outside.

We have a large family that always seems to have a million things happening at once.  Our family consists of 3 kids juggling academics, friends, sports, and extracurricular activities.  A husband who works up to 12 hours a day and spends every free moment working on our new home.  A new puppy who is being housebroken and trained, and I’m the mom juggling everyone’s schedules plus coordinating IEP meetings, doctors appointments, household errands, and of course running a business of my own too.  Life can easily get stressful for all of us, but I try my hardest to keep our days running smoothly and squeeze in time to relax, breathe, and reconnect.

Take family walks every afternoon.  Now that we have the new puppy, this has become an activity that we need to do, which means it can’t be pushed off our schedule because we don’t have time.  And I secretly love that!  Each afternoon after the kids get off the bus, or in the evening after dinner, everyone puts down their pencils or devices and we all hit the pavement and walk the neighborhood, to the local playground, or to the local ice cream stand and enjoy each other.  There is something about the fresh air, being outside together, and talking about our days, that just melts the stress away.

Read together.  As a special needs mom, reading can become a huge source of stress for my kids, so the perfect way to not only bring back the joy of reading but also unwind together is to curl up on the couch for a few moments and read a story to each other.  No pressure, no testing, no book levels, just a family listening to a great story.

Create a schedule that has wiggle room.  I hate being late, and when I have 3 kids going in 3 different directions at the same time, I get stressed quickly and that stress can rub off on everyone.  I started sitting down one day a week with my planner and fully planning out my entire week and being intentional about leaving wiggle room.  If appointments or practices are overlapping, this gives me plenty of time to reach out for help or reschedule things.  This means no more yelling at traffic while I am trying to get somewhere.  I also create a full shopping list for the week in my planner, this means one shopping trip for everything instead of running in and out of stores every day.  Having everything planned out and in view for the week ahead keeps me from being overwhelmed and the wiggle room allows lots of little moments to reconnect with my family.

Divide and Conquer.  With 5 people in our house, every chore can feel overwhelming we drag our feet and let something pile up.  Dirty laundry piles become mountains, sinks overfill, and dust ends up as thick as a blanket.  We are all busy, so putting all the chores on anyone of us, just isn’t fair, especially with children that are 9 and 12.  Every afternoon, I take a look at my cleaning list and everyone takes a couple tasks.  One child will empty the trash, another will vacuum, etc.  Then on a weekend morning, we do the same thing with larger cleaning tasks, like mowing the lawn or wiping the baseboards.  For me, having a clean house lowers my stress level no matter whats on my plate for the day.  With 3 kids, it’s not always possible, but when everyone works together, it is maintained more times than not.

Finding Time in Your Busy Schedule to Focus on Yourself

It’s that time of year for us moms, the whirlwind of the holiday season is behind us and we may just be able to take a breath before Easter and spring cleaning starts.
It always feels like I’m being pulled in a million directions, the house needs to be cleaned yet I should be at my desk working, but then who’s taking the kids to sports, and so on.  I know taking even just a moment to focus on myself can leave me feeling guilty, but we have to remember if we don’t take care of ourselves how can we take care of the ones we love?

My favorite way to de-stressed is to curl up with a hot cup of tea and watch a movie or read a book.  Since high-school, this has been my go-to easy way to relax, so I am excited to be teaming up with Twinings of London Tea to bring you my helpful mom tips.


As soon as I make a steaming cup of tea and curl up on the couch, I am immediately relaxed as my mind wanders off thinking about having tea with my Nana as a child and how my best friend would make me tea every Wednesday night all through high-school when we’d have sleepovers.

However, when we are being pulled in a million directions it is hard to find that time to sit and recharge.  So, us moms need to steal the moments when we can.


Here are my 5 easy tips to find time for yourself:

1. Put the kids to bed early!  This is so important in my house, this gives me time to clean up from the day, finish up some work, and most importantly destress and recharge myself.  Plus, kids need those extra hours of sleep to grow and learn.  The National Sleep Foundation recommends kids ages 6-13 get 9-11 hours of sleep.  I usually need 7, that gives me between 2 and 4 hours of time.  

Granted that is on a smooth day when my children go to sleep like clockwork, it’s not an every night thing, but when it goes as planned I am so grateful.

2. Lock your bedroom door.  Seriously, if your children are old enough, mine are 8 and 12, take 15 minutes and hide in your bedroom.  Tell them not to bother you unless it is a real emergency.  Kids will interrupt us while we use the phone, take a shower, and even while we are on the toilet, it does not make you a bad mom to put yourself in time out!

3. Get Some Outside Help.  Do you live close to your kid’s friends?  Or have some awesome neighbors?  Trade of 30 minutes of child care to give each other a quick break.  My neighbor and I used to take turns watching the kids play together outside so that we could each have some quiet time.

4. Get up early.  This one doesn’t work for me, I am so not a morning person but all my mommy friends swear by it.  Get up before the kids, sit in the quiet and enjoy a cup of tea as the sun comes up.

5. The electronic babysitter.  I know this has been controversial since the first technology with a screen was invented, but I honestly feel that in moderation screen time can be a sanity saver for busy moms.  If you are pulling your hair out from a super hard day, put on your kid’s favorite movie while you make yourself a cup of tea and read a book,  or give your child the tablet and let them play some games while you take a long shower.  You will be able to breathe and re-center yourself so that at the end of that little break, you are fully charged and able to go back to being the amazing mom you are!
