Get Ready For Flu Season at Sam’s Club with a Sick Basket

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Sam’s Club. All opinions are 100% mine.

Cold and Flu Season is coming, make sure you’re ready for it before it starts by stocking up on medicine and supplies at Sam’s Club while getting your Flu Shot!
A mom friend of mine once told me about her “Sick Basket” and we have created one in our house every year since!  It’s a basket or bin that you fill with all the supplies you will need when someone inevitably gets sick.  We tuck it away in the linen closet and then pull it out when we need it, this is the best feeling when that icky feeling strikes in the middle of the night!
I’m sure every family has their own list of favorite things that make a bad cold or even worse, the flu, more bearable.
Everything in my basket is conveniently available at Sam’s Club.  With 5 people in my family, we get sick!  I love being able to stock up on everything I’m going to need at Sam’s Club and forgetting about it until it’s needed.
In my Sick Basket I keep:
1) Hard Candy, for sore or dry throats.  I like caramel candies because they remind me of my Nana but many people prefer cough drops.
2) Tea, I love curling up with a hot and steamy cup of sleepy time tea when I’m under the weather.
3) Antibacterial Wipes, with a household of 5 the germs get passed along quickly.  I like to spray down remotes, door knobs and everything else that we touch often.
5) ChapStick, for when your lips get extra dry and under your nose get red and sore from too much wiping.
6) Tissues are a must.
7) Hand Sanitizer also helps clean up hands quickly while also disinfecting them.
8) A Thermometer is also an important thing to have quickly assessable.  Before keeping our in our sick basket, I used to lose thermometers all over the house which made for the crazy middle of the night searches too often.
9) A Water Bottle with a cover is also great for those days your couch-ridden.  I like to put a tablespoon of Honey, Lemon Juice, and a Table Spoon of warm Coconut Oil in my water when I’m sick for a little immune booster.
10)  Dog Walking Bags (or diaper trash bags) for stomach aches.  These make for cheap, easy, and disposable barf bags!
11) Medicine!  The best way to feel better faster is with a good quality cold and flu medication to relieve those miserable symptoms.  Vicks is a trusted brand in our home and when the hubby or I am sick we like to use DayQuil and Nyquil for relief.
Get Your Flu Shot
Visit your Sam’s Club Pharmacy today, to get your flu shot, it’s easy and convenient because they accept walk-ins! No appointment, no problem!
Every year up to 1 in 5 people get the flu in the US and more than 300,000 people were hospitalized with flu-related complications in the 2015-16 flu season.  These are scary statistics, so I want to do everything possible to keep my family from getting the flu.
Are you a Sam’s Club member?  What’s your favorite thing to stock up on at Sam’s?

Make HIV History!

HIV seems like it should be a thing of the past.  I remember as a child born in the 80’s, the fear people had of the unknown.  People feared contracting the disease from sitting on toilet seats and even being in the same room as an HIV positive person.  Looking back, I can’t imagine how these people must have felt, it’s heart breaking.
I was part of the generation who learned as a young teenager, what living with HIV was like from watching Pedro Zamora on Th Real World.  He put a face and many facts to a disease that had our parents scared of something we couldn’t quit understand.  However, decades have passed since that strange and scary period in time, we know so much about the disease, and yet according to UNAIDS 7,000 young women still contract HIV every week!

After over 30 years HIV is still here, it may not be on TV everyday or the topic at the dinner table, but it is still here and taking lives at a staggering rate.  In 2016, 1 million people died of HIV-related illnesses globally according to the World Health Organization.

Some of the Facts according to the CDC and UNAIDS:

Young people make up 20% of HIV/AIDS cases in the United States.

People between the ages of 13 and 24 accounts for over 1 in 5 HIV diagnoses.

400 children contract HIV everyday globally with 290 children dying of AIDS related illnesses every day.

30% of people globally who are HIV positive don’t know it.  The vast majority of people living with HIV are located in low and middle-income countries.

Our Top Tip for Treating Eczema and a Great Sweepstakes!

Growing up, I remember seeing the signature orange bottle of GOLD BOND powder in my grandmother’s bathroom cabinet. Then as an adult in nursing school, I quickly learned to always have GOLD BOND healing lotion on me to prevent my hands from cracking after being washed all day. As you can imagine, GOLD BOND quickly became a go-to brand in my household.

A couple years ago my son started breaking out in a red, bumpy rash that he couldn’t stop itching. I remember bath time was the worst; his skin was extra delicate from being wet, and no matter how hard I tried to stop him, he’d scratch and the marks looked so deep! It was heart breaking to hear him whine and cry about how itchy he was, no matter what lotions I used.

I was able to get an appointment to see his pediatrician within a couple of days, and within a couple of minutes into the exam, his pediatrician was able to tell me he had eczema. He said while the rash can be a nuisance, it was not a diagnosis to worry about. He recommended I get an anti-itch eczema cream at the pharmacy and with time I should see improvement.

I quickly ran to the lotion aisle of my local pharmacy, stopping at the GOLD BOND section out of habit and I was thrilled to see GOLD BOND® Ultimate Lotion Eczema Relief. GOLD BOND eczema relief lotion contains 2% colloidal oatmeal, 7 moisturizers and 3 vitamins to help relieve 5 symptoms of eczema. Plus, it is accepted by the National Eczema Association.

We use it every night after baths, particularly on his legs and arms, where most of his irritation is and the eczema relief lotion has stopped the itch-scratch cycle.

I am so happy with how much his eczema symptoms have improved!  He’s no longer whining in agony as I fight with him not to itch.

GOLD BOND eczema relief lotion results from a clinical study of eczema sufferers revealed:

8 out of 10 saw and felt significant skin improvement in 2 weeks

8 out of 10 experienced significant relief of dryness, scaling, and roughness in 2 weeks

9 out of 10 experienced significant relief of redness/irritation in 4 weeks

GOLD BOND eczema relief lotion is available at all major mass, drug and food retailers, retailing for $9.99.

4 Steps Mothers & Daughters Can Take Together to Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer has hit close to home for me, my mother is a breast cancer survivor.  She was diagnosed when I was pregnant with my oldest, and I remember how scary it was to think about becoming a mother if she wasn’t around.  By the grace of God, she has been cancer free for almost 11 years, but many are not as lucky.  Both my Grandmother and Great-Aunt lost their battles to Breast Cancer along with so many other strong and beautiful women.
I am a huge advocate for more breast cancer research and awareness, especially now that I have a daughter of my own.  I want her to have all the knowledge possible to reduce her risk for the future.

Scientists, physicians, and community partners in the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP), which is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), study the effects of environmental exposures on breast cancer risk later in life. They created a mother-daughter toolkit mothers can use to talk to daughters about steps to take together to reduce risk.

If your family is anything like mine, you know how crazy this time of year becomes.  I am so busy, and trying to catch a breath is never easy.  Between adjusting back to school, getting ready for all the holidays, fall sports, the house, and everything else that goes along with being a work at home mom and wife, there is no time for me to get sick.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any magical mommy spray to keep all the germs away from me that my children are bring home from school.  I do however have Samsung Health!

Samsung-Health-Ask-a-Expert-Online-Doctor

I recently learned about Samsung Health and couldn’t believe I never realized all these amazing features were already built into my phone!  Samsung Health tracks my activity, nutrition, sleep, and biometrics such as pulse, SpO2, blood pressure, and more.  It also syncs with some of my other favorite fitness apps.  These features alone had me hooked, but they aren’t even close to the best part of the program!

Samsung Health has an “Ask an Expert” feature that allows you to see a doctor online through your Samsung device!  I no longer have to lug 3 kids with me to the doctor’s office when I get sick, or even try to find a day and time that the doctor can fit me in between everything else life is throwing at me.  Now I can see a board-certified doctor in minutes, without any appointments needed.  Plus, they are available 24 hours a day, so when the kids are in bed and you’ve finally decided you’ve had enough of that sore throat, simply log on and connect with a doctor!  You can share the biometrics data you’ve tracked in Samsung Health with the doctor, and they can even send prescriptions to your local pharmacy if needed.  Online doctor consultations are covered many top health plans, which makes Ask an Expert both convenient and cost effective.

I was able to take advantage of this huge time saver yesterday, from my son’s football practice!  I have had a sore throat for almost a week and finally I found myself falling behind on projects and exhausted, while my throat started to get red while covered with white yucky stuff.  As I sat in the car, too tired for the bleachers, I picked up my phone and instantly got some answers.  Best of all, I got my medication sent to my local pharmacy and could pick them up at the end of practice.  Simple, fast, friendly and I am already feeling better, Samsung Health’s Ask and Expert definitely has my recommendation!
