What You Need to Know about Vaccines and Preventative Care for Your Teens

When the kids were babies, going to the pediatrician for check ups and keeping their vaccinations on schedule came second nature to me.  Now as my oldest is growing rapidly and is an inch away from towering over me, it’s not something that comes to mind quite as often.  However, our preteens still not only need annual check-ups they also need certain vaccines.

I understand that with preteens, life can get busy between school, friends and extra cirricular activities.  Which is likely why “the Majority of parents and teens believe it is important for all teens to be vaccinated, however the rates are far lower than where they should be.”  According to a recent survey conducted by Unity Consortium (United for Adolescent Vaccination).

Here in Florida preteens need their vaccines before the beginning of 7th grade, to receive a class schedule.  My sons school sent out automated messages throughout the summer which helped parent remember to schedule their preteen’s annual physical appointment in the midst of summer fun and back to school shopping.

That same Unity Consortium survey also revealed approximately 1 in 4 parents and teens believe that vaccines are more important for babies and not as important for teens.  Also that 34% of teens don’t know how being vaccinated helps them.  Therefore, it is so important for parents and teens to have more resources available to them so that they can learn more about the benefits of vaccinations.

Unity Consortium also discovered that 41% of parents believe their teen should only see a doctor when they feel sick.  With my family having several health scares, I personally can’t stress enough the importance of annual checkups, which can catch issues that may not necessarily bother a child right away.  Only visiting the doctor during bouts of illness also reduces the opportunity to discuss preventative health issues, such as immunizations.

Luckily Unity Consortium believes that Annual check-ups are a critical part of preventive care and that immunization is a central part of adolescent health, being the best investments, you can make to your teens’ long-term health.
They are helping raise awareness and addressing the challenges surrounding adolescent and young adult health, with a goal of ensuring 9 out of 10 teens are fully vaccinated against preventable diseases.

What Vaccinations are recommended for Teens?

  • Meningococcal-includes two distinct meningococcal disease vaccines (ACWY and B)
  • Tdap-tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and Td Booster (tetanus and diphtheria)
  • HPV-human papillomavirus
  • Flu

Quick and Simple Back to School Meal Time Ideas

Back to School Meal Ideas

Back to school season this year has had me thrown for a loop.  The kids are starting their second school year in Florida and the school year starts very early down here.

Going into this summer, I assumed this year wouldn’t be as bad after hustling through last year, I was wrong!  After living my entire life in New England, I guess it is still a habit to think of August as a summer month.  When school supplies started popping up in stores before the 4th of July, logically I thought “wow, I guess we have to start shopping” but did I? No!  I am so accustomed to the 4th of July being the kick off of the summer festivities not the time that the summer fun starts to wind down.  So, I procrastinated and procrastinated and as you can surely imagine, the first few weeks of school this year had me frazzled, pus to add to the stress, the youth sports season started at the same time.

There were several nights that I spent trying to squeeze through the school supply isles of my local department store with all the other stressed out mothers, after already spending hours on a practice field.   Luckily by day one, the kids had their new school clothes on and their backpacks packed, but once they got on the bus, I realized I hadn’t even thought about dinner, or lunch for the second day.  I excitedly thought about how I could now stroll through the grocery store without any kids attached to my carriage, but the last thing I wanted to think about was cooking.  Luckily Boston Market saved my sanity!

Boston Market Family Meal

I love Boston Market because I can run in and get a complete meal for my family that is not only affordable, but it also feels like home cooking.  We are still sitting around the table passing the mashed potatoes and vegetables at the end of the day talking about how school was, and this makes my heart happy and my brain a whole lot less frazzled.

Boston Market Family Meals feed families of three, four or more.  I usually get the Family Meal for 4, because my husband works the night shift and isn’t a big eater at dinner time, so it is always more than enough food for us.   With a main dish of rotisserie chicken, meatloaf, roasted turkey, or BBQ ribs, plus 4 sides and corn bread, this family dinner is an easy way to get everyone to the kitchen table without any complaints!

$1.99 Family Meal Deal!

Boston Market is offering a whole rotisserie chicken for only $1.99 with the purchase of any Family Meal!  In addition to feeding my whole family a delicious wholesome Family Meal, I got a whole fresh, never frozen rotisserie chicken for just $1.99.  These chickens can be used in tasty school lunches, afternoon snacks, and into dinner recipes to save time without sacrificing flavor.  This deal made meal times during the school week so much more manageable!

How I used my $1.99 Fresh Never Frozen Rotisserie Chicken

Omelets!  I love mixing up the usual cereal or waffles quick breakfasts that happen in my house during busy mornings.  Omelets are a perfect option when I have cooked chicken in the fridge waiting for me.  My kids love eggs, and I love being able to add some nutritious chicken breast and veggies to their breakfast.  With the help of Boston Market’s $1.99 meal deal, I can have a hot breakfast on the table as quickly as it takes my children to pick out which cereal they’d want.

Chicken Salad is a lunch time favorite for my family, the kids love it as a sandwich, while my husband and I can eat it by the bowl full.  Using Boston Market’s Rotisserie Chicken makes my normal chicken salad a lot more flavorful, plus there is no cooking for me!  Lunch is ready in a few minutes.

For a third meal, I used what was left of our rotisserie chicken in a quick Ceaser Salad mix to add some protein to flavor to it.

For $1.99, this Boston Market Meal Deal, saved me time while feeding my family 3 delicious meals in addition to the original family dinner I purchased.
Are you struggling with meal time during the back to school stress?  Boston Market has you covered!

6 Must Have Products

I still can’t believe it’s back to school season already.  I swear I blinked and the entire summer break flew by!  With the new school year comes back to school shopping for endless school supplies, new clothes, and a shopping cart full of tissues, antibacterial wipes, printer paper, and whatever else the teachers add to their wish list, to keep all these kids learning all year.  Back to school time can be busy and school shopping easily becomes stressful, so it’s easy to understand why most of us moms forget about stocking up on some great things for at home that will make our back to school routine a lot smoother.

With the help of Babbleboxx I have compiled a list of 5 items you need to add to your back to school shopping list, like now!

1) Wemo Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug. With back to school season, comes sports season for my family, which means I am running from schools to fields all afternoon.  The smart technology of Wemo Mini Smart Plug is perfect for busy families, simply plug it into the wall, download the free app, connect the Wemo to your Wi-Fi and you can remotely control your lights and appliances.  The Wemo is also perfect for nights when moms not home, they may try to push Grammy for one more book, but I can remotely turn off their lights and they know mom says it is bedtime.

With promo code WEMOmommyhoodlife you can save 20% off a Wemo Mini now through Sept 30th 2017 here!

2) Zoono GermFree24 Hand Sanitizer, I swear the kids bring home germs faster than they bring home those huge packets of forms we need to fill out. Zoono GermFree24 Hand Sanitizer is a water-based antibacterial hand sanitizer that is a must buy for us this year.  It does not rub off and remains active on the skin’s surface through hand washing and sweating which is important for active kids like mine, plus it comes in both a foam and sprays version.  I am putting one by the front door, in the car, and in my bag.

3) Snip-its Tangy Apple 3-in-1 Conditioning Shampoo, Morning Miracle Mousse Styling Spray & Silly Slicker Ultimate Sculpting Gel. With summer coming to an end, the pool no longer counts as bath time and hosing the kids off with a sprinkler isn’t an option.  The kids are ready for stylish hairstyles and the Snip-its Haircuts for Kids’ line of professional kid’s hair products are amazing!

These products are made to be gentle on kid’s hair, skin, and eyes.  Plus, they all smell incredible!  We have been using them every day, and they are keeping our hair washing and styling stress-free.  You can shop Snip-its hair care line here.

4) OOLY Fun School Supplies. Between homework and all the forms, you will be filling out it’s a great time to stock up on some fun pencils and pens.  I love OOLY’s products, they make everyday mundane items fun and colorful!  We are currently obsessed with both their Jumbo Brights Neon Colored Pencils and the Yummy Yummy Yummy Scented Gel Pens.  OOLY also has a great line of 2-in-1 Flip Side Notebooks to keep all your events and projects organized.  Plus, the Mighty Zipper Pouch is perfect for storing everything!  Shop these cute school supplies here and save 15% Off Orders of $35 or more plus Free Shipping in Continental U.S. and get a Free OOLY Eraser with promo code: ready.

6) Pure Growth Organics. Create an Epic “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” Viewing Party with Movie Night Snacks and No-Sew Costumes!

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Snyder’s-Lance, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #Pop4Captain

Create an Epic Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie Viewing Party

My kids love Captain Underpants!  We have all the books and have already preordered the “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” DVD at Walmart.  As our excitement builds for the movie’s DVD release, I have started prepping for a perfect Family Movie Night Screening Party.  Complete with the perfect movie night snacks and DIY Captain underpants costumes.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Captain Underpants is perfect for a family movie night, with incredible voice talent of both Kevin Hart and Ed Helms.  Also, best of all this film has a lot of heart!  The story explores the great friendship of two boys and their love of writing and creativity.  This is such a great message for kids to see, while they laugh uncontrollably at the outrageous humor.

This movie is receiving A+ reviews and is certified fresh, so make sure you pre-order your copy of the Captain Underpants DVD today!

After we have busted out all the blankets and pillows in the house to create a comfy viewing area in the living room, it’s time to think about the best movie night snacks that are not only delicious for the kiddos, but also easy.  I’m prepping a party amid back to school and sports season, so convenience is important.  I headed to Walmart to stock up on Pop Secret popcorn and Lance crackers, both of which are normal staples in my home and perfect for a movie night party!

You can’t have a movie night without popcorn!  My kids are always pulling out the Pop Secret Movie Theatre Butter Popcorn when ever a DVD enters my home.  We choose Pop Secret because of the great butter taste, it’s delicious and a great quality popcorn.  The bags pop quickly and fully!  So, this will definitely be on our movie night snack bar.

I grabbed 4 packs of red plastic cups for under $1 at Walmart and cut underpants shapes out of cardstock.  Then I simply hot glued the underpants to the cups and filled them with popcorn.  This is a simple way to add some fun to your snack table!

Lance Sandwich Crackers are another snack that we will undoubtedly have on a snack bar table.  Lance has been making little sandwiches for over 100 years with two awesome crackers on the outside with incredible spread in-between.  These cracker packs have been a snack time staple for my family for as long as I can remember.  My Nana used to pack them in her cooler bag whenever my brother and I would go with her to the playground or for a picnic.  Now I always keep these flavorful, wholesome, filling, and portable snacks on hand.  They are perfect for school snacks, on the go, and when I need to keep a group of kids happy.

Captain Underpants Costumes

With snack handled and a viewing area full of comfy blankets and pillows it’s time to add some extra fun to your viewing party with easy no-sew Captain Underpants costumes!  Aidan got a kick out of these cute costumes and I know my nephews will be all smiles on movie night.

To start with I grabbed a package of plain white underwear in the boys section of Walmart.  I made sure to get a size that would easily fit over their clothes.
This takes care of the “Underpants” part.

Now for the cape!

You’ll need:
Red Felt by the bolt, 1 Yard easily made 3 capes so have it cut to your preffered length.

Large piece of Black Felt
Large Piece of Yellow Felt
Fabric Scissors
Glue Gun
Printable Template (Underpants / Cape)

Velcro (if you’d like to add it to the collar opposed to just have a hole cut open)
Iron on Adhesive (if you want a stronger hold that will last in the washing machine, use iron on adhesive instead of a glue gun)

Create the Capes:

Cut the red felt to your desired length, depending on the ages of your guests.  I went with 24” by 32”.

Print and cut the free printable template.

Fold the felt length wise and trace and cut the capes neck hole and shoulder curves.  Once you have done this, you have a basic felt cape that can be decorated in countless ways.

For the Captain Underpants cape we I traced a large circle with the black felt, using a salad bowl and cut that out along with an underpants shape with the yellow felt.

Next, I hot glued the black circle to the center of the cape.  Then, added the underwear shape to the center of the black felt circle.

The entire process took me about 15 minutes, and if I had chose to use iron on adhesive or Velcro, the process still would have taken less than 30 minutes.

I can’t wait to see a bunch of little Captain Underpants’ smiling and laughing on September 12th!

The Captain Underpants DVD is will be available in Walmart stores 9/12! Be sure to reserve your copy now by pre-ordering today! While supplies last

How I Saved Money on My Orlando Family Road Trip!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Shell. The opinions and text are all mine.

From pastels to neons, mix and match colorsand create a look that's bursting with color! (1)

Summer is in full swing and that means I am taking full advantage of my Instant Gold Status from Shell and the Fuel Rewards® program, and hitting the road to make some amazing family memories!

How I Saved on My Orlando Family Road Trip

This month we did an Orlando Family Road Trip and I saved big time at the pump. Remember Shell is currently giving members of the *Fuel Rewards® Program “Instant Gold Status” which rewards members with an automatic 5 cents a gallon reward on every fill-up, up to 20 gallons, for at least 6 months. However, by using my Mastercard that is linked to our Fuel Rewards® card before and during our trip, I was able to earn additional rewards and then stack them to get the most savings. You can sign up for the Fuel Rewards program and start saving with Instant Gold Status here (it’s free, no credit card required!).

Tips for Saving with Fuel Rewards® card

Book your hotels ahead of time. By planning out your road trip stops and hotel stays ahead of time, you are able to get the best-valued hotel. Book your hotel through the Fuel Rewards® website, powered by Priceline, and you not only save from pre-booking, you also earn 20 cents a gallon (up to 20 gallons) off your next fill-up for every $300 spent. When I was booking our hotel a few weeks ago, there were over 400 hotels to choose from, so finding a hotel that fits your needs is a piece of cake!

Choose restaurants that allow you to earn rewards. Taking a road trip and vacationing with children can be a lot of work. I try to pack snacks for the road, and quick options for our hotel room, but when it comes to full meals the last thing I want to do on my vacation is to cook for 3 picky kids. Within a 5-minute drive of our hotel we found several pizzerias, a full Italian restaurant, a lobster house, and my husband’s favorite a Brazilian Steak House to eat at. Don’t feel like pizza or steak? No problem, there were 133 restaurants in my search of Orlando alone. At the Sinha Brazilian Steak House, we earned 10 cents per gallon rewards on our next fill, up to 20 gallons, not too shabby for the food we would have tried anyways!

Stock up on your vacation must-haves before you leave. Shopping at hotel gift shops or grabbing a poncho from a kiosk in a theme park will easily drain your budget. Instead, plan ahead, the best part of road tripping is that you aren’t limited to a small suitcase. Do most of your shopping ahead of time at stores that allow you to earn rewards. Before our last trip, I stopped at Winn-Dixie for snacks, drinks, refillable cups, clip-on fans, and all sorts of things that I knew I would find myself buying at a theme park. I saved on the cost of everything, plus I earned 3 cents a gallon on our next fill, up to 20 gallons, for every $100 I spent.

Plus, every woman knows the need to shop for new clothes or accessories before a vacation, right? Head over to the Fuel Rewards® site for a list of online retailers that let you earn points as you shop online. These are stores you already shop at, and more than likely already doing it online, so why not put some savings in your pocket while you’re at it!

With all these ways of earning rewards on top of the 5 cents a gallon Instant Gold Status reward, it is so easy to earn rewards, stack them and save at the pump. Don’t forget to sign up for the Fuel Rewards program here.

Tips to Remember:

There’s a 20-gallon limit on fill-ups. Get the most out of your rewards by filling up when your tank is low.

Restrictions apply. To qualify for the Gold/Silver Status offers, you must be a Fuel Rewards® member and swipe your Fuel Rewards® card or enter your Alt ID when you fuel at a participating Shell station. With Gold Status, you will receive 5¢/gal in Fuel Rewards® savings on every fill-up. The 5¢/gal reward for Gold Status will be combined with other rewards in your Fuel Rewards® account. If you are an existing Fuel Rewards® member, you will receive Gold Status from 6/5/2017 through 12/31/17, the “Existing Member Introductory Period”. If you are a new Fuel Rewards® member, you will receive Gold Status for the initial month you join through the last day of the month, 6 full calendar months later, the “New Member Introductory Period”. The last 3 months of the Existing Member Introductory Period or the New Member Introductory Period (collectively the “Introductory Period”) is the “Qualification Period”. You will retain your Gold Status during the Qualification Period, but you must make 6 qualifying fuel purchases to qualify for Gold Status for the next 3 months, the “Benefit Period”. During the Benefit Period, you must continue to make 6 qualifying fuel purchases to maintain your Gold Status for the next 3-month Benefit Period. A qualifying fuel purchase is any fuel purchase at a participating Shell station in which you swipe your Fuel Rewards® card or enter your Alt ID and fill up with at least 5-gallons of any grade of fuel. For example, if you are a new Fuel Rewards® member and register on 6/15/2017, you will receive Gold Status through the New Member Introductory Period (i.e., 12/31/2017). You will need to fill up with at least 5 gallons of fuel at least 6 times during the Qualification Period (i.e., 10/1/2017 and 12/31/2017) to maintain Gold Status during the Benefit Period (i.e., from 1/1/2018 to 3/31/2018). Thereafter, if you continue to fill up with at least 5 gallons of fuel at least 6 times during the successive 3 consecutive month Benefit Periods, you will retain your Gold Status. If you do not maintain your Gold Status, you will receive Silver Status. With Silver Status, you will receive 3¢/gal in Fuel Rewards® savings. The 3¢/gal reward for Silver Status will be combined with other rewards in your Fuel Rewards® account. Redeem Fuel Rewards® savings with your Fuel Rewards® card or Alt ID at participating Shell stations. Fuel Rewards® savings are limited to 20 gallons of fuel per purchase, per vehicle, or fraud limits placed by Shell and/or limits placed on your financial card by your financial institution, each of which may be lower. Fuel Rewards® savings must be redeemed in a single transaction. Once you begin to dispense fuel using your Fuel Rewards® savings, you must dispense to the 20-gallon limit or you forfeit any remaining discounted gallons of fuel. For example, if you only pump fifteen (15) gallons of fuel, you would abandon the remaining five (5) gallons of discounted fuel. If you have a rewards balance greater than the current per-gallon price of fuel, the price will roll down to the maximum capability of the fuel equipment, and your remaining rewards will be saved for a future fuel purchase. The dispenser may require a price of up to 10.9¢/gal. It may not be possible to combine multiple discounts and/or rewards in a single transaction. For purchases of $75 or more, please go inside to pay. Unbranded diesel and alternative fuels may not be eligible. The Fuel Rewards® program is owned and operated by Excentus Corporation.
